**Last Day of School!  Have a Great Summer!**
What We Are Learning in Class 1-2
Math -  Chapter 12 Two-Dimensional Shapes
In chapter 12, children continue to extend their understanding of two-dimensional shapes.  The children will categorize and describe shapes based on their attributes such as sides and vertices.  Children will learn to combine two-dimensional shapes to make a composite shape.  As the chapter progress, the children will learn to decompose shapes into smaller shapes.

It is very important for the children to keep practicing their addition and subtraction facts within ten!  Knowing these facts will help them immensely. There are many math apps where the children can practice these facts or you can simple make flashcards for practice.  We have been playing many different games in school to help the students with fluency of addition facts within ten.
ELA
Wonders - Unit 6 - Week 5
Essential Question - How can weather affect us?
Books - "Wrapped in Ice", "Paul Bunyan and the Popcorn Blizzard", "! "Rain School", and "Rainy Weather".
Skills - Silent letters wr, kn & gn, special pronouns: anyone, everyone, anything, everything and nothing, use of commas and compound words.
Comprehension Strategy - Cause and Effect
Respond to Reading -
It is so important that the first grade students are able to respond to their reading.  We have been working hard to pay attention to the details in each and every story we read as well as answer questions about the text.  In school, the children are always encouraged to go back in the story and find the answer to the question being asked.  You can support your child at home by always asking them questions after each story you read together.  They can also write and draw about a part of the story they liked, favorite character, story events...the ideas are endless!

Writing - Students will become authors and illustrators! As always, they will continue to write stories using complete sentences that include a capital letter in the beginning, spaces between each word and punctuation at the end. At this time of the year, the students will begin to be encouraged to write three sentences on one topic.  This will help them build stamina during writing time!
Religion - The Ascension of Jesus

The children will listen to the Bible story The Ascension of Jesus, Acts 1:1-10 and Luke 24:50-53.  They will learn that after Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, He spent 40 days with his disciples on earth.  Jesus taught them many things during this time and promised to send the Holy Spirit.
Jesus says Good-bye!
Acts 1:1-10
Jesus said to his friends one day,
"Very soon I must go away,
Don't be sad because
I will come back again!"
Jesus told his friends:
"Tell my story everywhere."
And then as his beloved friends were standing there
Jesus went up, up, up
Into the sky!
The children will create a craft to celebrate the Ascension of Jesus!

Science
We will continue working on Unit 10 in our science book Forces and Energy.  In this unit, the students will learn that forces change the way objects move.  They will also learn that sound is energy that you hear.
The Life Cycle of a Frog
The first grade classes have adapted a tadpole and we are so excited to observe and learn all about our new friend! We have spent time studying the stages of a frog's life cycle and have learned they begin as eggs, hatch into tadpoles, become froglets and finally a frog.  Our class tadpole is now a frog!  It is a water frog and actively swims and plays all day.

Please be sure that your child is reading each night.  It is so important that they practice reading each and every day to develop the skills learned in school.  Like anything else, mastery requires practice!!
Please remember to complete your child's reading log each night.

Raz-Kids.com is an excellent resource for building reading skills.  Each student works at his/her level to read books and answer comprehension questions.  They can earn stars as incentives that they can use to build robots and rocket ships.  Please take some time to sit with your child and explore this great resource.  The children are all very excited about this!

Please check your child's folder regularly as there are important notices going home with the children daily.

Please make sure to send a snack in to school each day.

Students are to wear their gym uniform as well as white or black sneakers on gym days.
Please make sure to write your child's name on the tag of his/her gym sweatshirts.  The students often take these off and mix them up!

If your child is absent, it is important that you send an absent note to school on the day he or she returns.
